The Oprah Winfrey Network aired discussions of “One subject that will be discussed is skin color, and as a follow-up to his Dark Girlsdocumentary, the network will air Bill Duke’s newest foray into complexion issues, Light Girls.”
On January 17,2015 it was an honor for me to attend the viewing of “Light Girls” with some of the cast members in this documentary, at Snow Orthodontics Theater in Palmdale, Ca.
This documentary really hit home for me due to me being a black, light skinned woman with green eyes. There were issues that were talked about that I thought no one else went through. I rode with one of the cast members (Edna Sims) to this event, so we had time to talk in the car. She was telling me the horrific stories of living in Detroit and getting beat up everyday, and having her earring pulled out to where it ripped her ear.
There were Q&A’s at the end and very interesting points were made about dark vs. light. This is an issue that I feel needs to be more openly talked about.
I heard there was some controversy over this particular episode, but I feel black is black not matter how light or dark the melanin is and we get treated differently.
Check out some of the videos below and pictures that I took of the cast members.
