Singer Alyson Williams will participate in the United States Postal Service official unveiling of the Dr. Maya Angelou commemorative stamp reveal. Dr. Angelou will be honored for the important work that she has provided to the world.

The First Day of Issue (FDOI) ceremonies will mark the dedication of Dr. Angelou’s new commemorative postage stamp on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. Alyson Williams will open the ceremony with the National Anthem and Lift Every Voice and Sing. “I am honored to participate in the tribute to someone that was so dear to my heart,” says Alyson. Dr. Angelou and Alyson had a special relationship, she sang “God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds” during her memorial in Winston Salem and New York City. Attendees raved over Alyson’s rendition of the song.

Alyson Williams is a talented recording artist and actor. Known as The First Lady of Def Jam, who sings classic soul ballads, jazz standards as well as legitimate Broadway show tunes. She studied dance with the legendary Arthur Mitchell at the Dance Theater of Harlem and at the world renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Alyson starred in more than a dozen musical stage plays that toured across the country. She appeared on Broadway in Rollin on the T.O.B.A., One Mo Time and the 25th Anniversary Revival of The Wiz. She has shared the stage with Nancy Wilson, Chaka Khan, Freddie Jackson, Nick Ashford and Valarie Simpson and Dr. Maya Angelou, to name a few.

While signed to Def Jam Columbia/Sony Records, Alyson recorded two albums on the OBR (Original Black Records) label. Her first album titled Raw spent an impressive 67 weeks on the Billboard charts. The album produced four top five singles, one of which is the popular hit, Just Call My Name. Her second album, self-titled, featured songs produced by Al B. Sure and Babyface, boasted several chart topping singles. As a session singer Alyson loaned her vocals to many chart topping R&B and Hip Hop hits including the iconic Kurtis Blow song “Basketball.” She has appeared on Soul Train, The Jay Leno Show, BET on Jazz, The Mo’nique Show and most recently Unsung.

In Alyson’s spare time she mentors children and young adults. She also does vocal coaching and artist development for up and coming artists. Through her production company, A.W.P., A Woman’s Prerogative, she is writing musical stage plays, books, television treatments, a radio show and several live concert presentations.
